nbn™ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the nbn™?

nbn™ is Australia’s national wholesale only network. The nbn™ utilises three technologies, fibre, fixed wireless and satellite. Within the next decade the plan is for every home, school and workplace in the country to have access to the nbn™.

Once built, the nbn™ will also deliver your telephone service. The technology may be new, but using your phone will essentially be the same. Eighteen (18) months after the nbn™ Fibre has rolled into your area, your copper telephone lines will be cut off and you will need to choose an nbn™ approved phone provider.

I’m renting, what do I have to do to get connected to the nbn™

Permission from the property owner must be received prior to an nbn™ terminating device or satellite dish being installed at the premises. We recommend you speak with your property manager or land lord to discuss the connection.

I share a house with others

For Fibre and Fixed Wireless, it’s great news for those sharing a house; you can get up to four (4) individual broadband connections from the one Network Terminating Device. So there will be no more arguing over who used what data, and who has to pay what part of the bill.

I live in a unit/townhouse

Every multi-dwelling unit can have an nbn™ Service once it rolls out to your area. For this to happen the Body Corporate or building owner must register with nbn™ so they can project manage the rollout of the nbn™ to each of the premises in the complex.

Are the Speeds Guaranteed?

All speeds quoted by nbn™ are maximum peak speed available. This does not however guarantee that the devices in your home will be able to achieve the quoted speed.

Your speed may be affected depending on multiple different factors including :

Will my current modem or router work with nbn™?

The Network Terminating Device (NTD) provides one Ethernet connection per subscribed internet service. If you wish to have Wi-Fi coverage to share the internet connection around the premises you will require an nbn™ ready Wireless Router.

To gain the full benefit of the nbn™ Fibre speeds you should have an nbn™ ready router (not a modem router). ANT Communications can supply you with an nbn™ ready 4-port router, or if you already have a router we suggest you give us a call or check with the manufacturer to see if it is capable of supporting nbn™.

What will happen during the installation?

You, or an authorised representative (someone you trust who is over 18), needs to be there for the whole appointment, to let the installer in and advise where the equipment should be located.

nbn™ Co has a strict "leave it as it's found" policy so there is no need to be concerned about any permanent damage to your property.

If your premises is in a nbn™ Fibre service area but is not already connected to the nbn™, the installation will include running a fibre-optic cable from the street to a small box on the outside of your house (the Premises Connection Device). If you are having Fixed Wireless installed, the installer will put an antenna on the outside wall of your premises. The installer will then drill a small hole through your wall and feed the cable through into a wall plate that will be installed inside the house. A cable runs from there to the Network Termination Device, which looks a bit like a broadband modem. There may also be a separate power supply box.

If your premises is in a nbn™ Satellite service area but is not already connected to the nbn™, the installation will include the installation of a 1.2M dish on your roof (tin roof only) or on a pole attached to your house or a free standing ground mount if you have a tile roof or for Line of Sight reasons. A pair of cables will be run from the dish and the installer will then drill a small hole through your wall and feed the cable through into a wall plate that will be installed inside the house. A cable runs from there to the Network Termination Device, which is a satellite broadband modem.

How long will it take to get installed?

There are three classes of service For Fibre and Fixed Wireless (how much of the nbn™ infrastructure is in place)

  1. Service Class 1 - The fibre is in the street but has not been connected to the house – up to 20 business days depending on technician availability.
  2. Service Class 2 - The fibre is in the street and has been run to the premises connection device (drop box or antenna on outside of house) – up to 14 business days depending on technician availability.
  3. Service Class 3 - All the nbn™ hardware has been installed fibre in street, to the outside of the house and the NTD has been installed (inside the house) 2-5 days.

If you are having a satellite service installed the installation can take up to 4-6 weeks depending on your location as well as technician availability.
